TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set

This skill set provides VET practitioners with the assessor competencies to meet the Standards for RTOs requirements.

The Assessor skill set covers the following 3 units of competency:

  • TAEASS412 Assess competence
  • TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation
  • TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs

TAEASS412 Assess competence

This unit addresses arguably one of the most important skills of the vocational trainer. The ability to make to gather quality evidence and make good assessment decisions.

Making the wrong assessment decision can have disastrous consequences. In this unit, you learn to do it properly.

The key areas covered within this unit include:

  • Planning to conduct assessment, customising the assessment process and preparing your candidates
  • Collecting quality evidence
  • Making judgements
  • Review your assessment practice

To complete the unit we get you to conduct a total of at least 6 assessments, including some recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessments. Some of these we will observe you interacting with your candidate, providing feedback and preparing them for assessment.

TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation

This unit outlines the skills and knowledge required to participate in an assessment validation process.

It applies to assessors and workplace supervisors with assessment validation responsibilities participating in, but not necessarily leading, the process.

It looks at validation from two perspectives:

  • Validating assessment tools and processes before they are used to assess people, to make sure they are valid, and of suitable quality (“pre-assessment validation”)
  • Validating assessment outcomes – seeing how assessors performed using the assessment tools, checking their decisions and processes (“post-assessment validation”)

To complete the unit we’ll have you participating in a range of validation sessions.

TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs

This unit focuses on the skills and knowledge to effectively use nationally recognised training products to address the learning needs of vocational students. Participants will learn to identify training needs by accessing and interpreting industry and learner information, and then research, select, and apply appropriate training products. These are typically nationally recognised training products such as units of competency from a training package.

This involves interpreting various training and assessment strategies, seeking feedback, and adapting to meet specific requirements.

To successfully complete the unit, participants must complete a number of projects where they select nationally recognised training outcomes (such as units of competency and qualifications available on Training.gov.au) analyse them and develop strategies for teaching and assessing people.

Your ability to deliver excellent training and thorough assessment begins with your choice to receive the highest standard of education from an RTO who is truly passionate about supporting people throughout their journey to becoming remarkable trainers and assessors.

All units of competency obtained within this skill set are directly transferrable to the full TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Mentorship Program

A practical, fully supported, self-paced online course with weekly meetings with an experienced industry professional who will be your mentor.

Duration: up to 6 months to complete, however it is common for students to complete this within 4-8 weeks with regular commitment.

Direct Assessment

A self-paced online course with minimal support and no structured program. It’s designed for people with Vocational Education and Training (VET) experience who are self-motivated, and comfortable just completing the assessment tasks with minimal guidance. A strict application process applies.

Duration: up to 6 months to complete, however it is common for students to complete this within 4-8 weeks with regular commitment.

This course involves you developing courses structures using nationally recognised training products, assessing students to determine if they are competent against the requirements of units of competency, and participating in the validation of assessments.

Major assessment activities include:

Packaging two qualifications from Training Packages.

You’ll select two current qualifications from Training Packages listed on training.gov.au and plan the structure of core and elective units for a specific target group of learners.

You’ll then seek feedback from an industry professional on your proposed structure and respond to a series of questions about your work and VET in general.

By completing this unit, students develop a strong understanding of the broader structure of Training Packages, VET qualifications, skill sets and units of competency. People who complete this unit often tell us that it helps them finally “make sense” of the VET system, giving them greater confidence to work within its structure.

Assessing Competency

This unit is about the role and responsibility of being an assessor. You’ll discover that assessment is much more than simply marking exams, that it’s a professional judgement process that carries significant responsibility.

To complete this unit, you’ll assess six people against 3 different nationally recognised units of competency. Unless otherwise arranged, we provide the assessment tools, along with case studies and video evidence, so you can make assessment decisions about each student’s competence. On several occasions you will be required to source volunteer students to demonstrate giving feedback and instructions for assessment.

You’ll also work through a range of challenging scenarios where you’ll need to respond to students’ needs for reasonable adjustment, while still maintaining the integrity of the unit requirements.

Throughout the unit, you’ll answer questions that encourage you to reflect deeply on your practice as an assessor, as well as complete rigorous knowledge-based questions about assessment in the VET system.

Validating Assessments

In this unit, you’ll participate in the validation of several assessment tools and assessment judgements.

We’ll provide newly designed assessment tools that contain potential issues and non-compliances. As part of a validation team, you’ll review these tools, identify areas of concern and report on your findings.

You’ll also review assessment evidence that has already been assessed by other assessors. This will involve evaluating the assessor’s performance, identifying what they did well and recognising where improvements are needed.

We run live online workshops every second month so this work can be completed in a realistic, simulated team environment. In some cases, we may also approve you to complete these activities with a qualified assessor in your own organisation.

Most people who are new to the world of Training and Assessment take 6 months.

There are many exceptions though. For example, we have had industry-experienced people already working within the VET sector finish it in a matter of weeks because they have some RPL as well as well as a range of experience to draw on.

We have also applied additional extensions beyond the 12 month enrolment period for people who might have come upon some difficult personal circumstances during the course. You can rest assured that we will look after you and provide a service that suits you.

It is difficult to provide a more accurate time-frame without knowing more about you. You are most welcome to call us on 1300 660 609 obligation-free for a discussion about your needs, we will then be able to provide you with a more accurate time-frame.

Please carefully consider whether or not you have the time to dedicate to completing this course.

It is one level below a diploma. Up until the end of 2017, shonky providers (who have since been either shut down or forbidden to offer the course) were often found offering it in short timeframes and that has created a false perception that this course is a piece of cake. With dedication and good support it’s a challenge worth accepting!

If you’re unable to consistently dedicate at least 10 hours per week you need to reconsider if now is the right time to undertake this course. We have regular intakes so there’s no rush to enrol now. Talk to us about your situation if you’re unsure.

There are two sections we want you to read, understand and be comfortable with before enrolling with us:

  1. The Important Enrolment Information section – a combination of a client handbook and general terms and conditions which apply to all courses.
  2. The information below which includes entry requirements specific to this course.

To enrol into a Training and Assessment qualification with Accellier you must:

  • Have a good English language and literacy skills sufficient to undertake study at Certificate IV level.
  • Have access to a training organisation to practice your skills and be assessed in.
  • Be able to demonstrate vocational competency in your proposed teaching and assessing area (Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, e.g., having industry experience or holding a relevant qualification).
  • Have access to a suitably experienced 3rd party person who can assist us with making our assessment decisions where required (e.g., you have the support of a manager or supervisor to do the course).
  • Have some basic computer skills – most importantly, the ability organise and manage your files and documents, edit documents, research information on the internet, install and use apps, record video on your phone/iPad or similar.
  • Have regular access to a computer with a reliable broadband Internet connection (there is a lot of video and audio material in the course, so having a good download speed and allowance is recommended)
  • Be capable of self-motivation, time management and creative problem solving.
  • Have a positive attitude and willingness to learn – you understand that learning anything worthwhile can be a challenge and you’re ready for that challenge.
  • Bring a laptop if completing face-to-face training.

Your computer or laptop (this is just a rough guide) should be reasonably modern and you should have an up to date web browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome. Generally speaking if you can see and hear YouTube-style videos then you’ll be able to take full advantage of our resources.
