TAESS00026 Foundation Skills Integration Skill Set

Foundation skills are basic skills that people require in order to be employable, such as reading, writing, communication and basic numeracy skills.

This skill set focuses on the ability to recognise foundation skill requirements in nationally recognised training programs, and to provide the right support, whether in a work, learning, or assessment setting.

It’s designed for vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers, and assessors.

These units provide credit towards TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

This skill set is primarily used by teachers of the FSK – Foundation Skills Training Package.

If you teach and assess FSK units of competency, there is a requirement to hold what was previously the TAESS00009 Address Foundation Skills in Vocational Practice Skill Set. The current equivalent of TAESS00009 is this skill set; the TAESS00026.

It is important to note that competence in this skill set does not indicate that a person is a qualified specialist adult language, literacy or numeracy practitioner.

Your ability to deliver excellent training and thorough assessment begins with your choice to receive the highest standard of education from an RTO who is truly passionate about supporting people throughout their journey to becoming remarkable trainers and assessors.

Online via an Assessment Only, or RPL Pathway

Duration: up to 6 months to complete, however many participants complete this skill set in a matter of weeks, if they are already experienced.

You might notice that each unit involves training and assessment. In this course, we will observe you delivering training. This is typically via video recording. You can link these assessments together too, so the training sessions you conduct can be used for all 3 units.

We will also ask you questions and have you analysing units of competency to determine their foundation skills.

If you are involved in teaching/assessing anything from the FSK – Foundation Skills Training Package – yes.

In November 2019 version 2.o of the FSK – Foundation Skills Training Package was released. With it came new requirements for anyone teaching and assessing units from this training package.

Previously, like most other VET courses, FSK trainers just needed the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment plus industry skills and experience.

It includes three qualifications:

  • FSK10219 – Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways
  • FSK10119 – Certificate I in Access to Vocational Pathways
  • FSK20119 – Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways

These are quite basic, entry level qualifications typically designed for individuals who need to develop foundation skills to access a further vocational learning pathway.

They must:

  • satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards
  • have sound knowledge of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)
  • have demonstrable expertise, knowledge and skills in the vocational contextualisation and assessment of digital technology
  • hold TAESS00009 Address Foundation Skills in Vocational Practice Skill Set (now the TAESS00026)
  •  or  a higher level education qualification, such as the TAE80113 Graduate Diploma of Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Practice (and its equivalent TAE70111); or
Bachelor of Education, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Education, or higher. This may include qualifications relating to TESOL, adult education or vocational education.

Where did we get this from? Each FSK unit of competency has it in the Assessment Conditions section – see an example here (scroll right down to the end of the document).

If you hold TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills, and either the TAE40110, TAE40116 or TAE40122 then there is likely to be Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for you.

There are two sections we want you to read, understand and be comfortable with before enrolling with us:

  1. The Important Enrolment Information section – a combination of a client handbook and general terms and conditions which apply to all courses.
  2. The information below which includes entry requirements specific to this course.

To enrol into a Training and Assessment qualification with Accellier you must:

  • Have a good English language and literacy skills sufficient to undertake study at Certificate IV level.
  • Have access to a training organisation to practice your skills and be assessed in.
  • Be able to demonstrate vocational competency in your proposed teaching and assessing area (Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, e.g., having industry experience or holding a relevant qualification).
  • Have access to a suitably experienced 3rd party person who can assist us with making our assessment decisions where required (e.g., you have the support of a manager or supervisor to do the course).
  • Have some basic computer skills – most importantly, the ability organise and manage your files and documents, edit documents, research information on the internet, install and use apps, record video on your phone/iPad or similar.
  • Have regular access to a computer with a reliable broadband Internet connection (there is a lot of video and audio material in the course, so having a good download speed and allowance is recommended)
  • Be capable of self-motivation, time management and creative problem solving.
  • Have a positive attitude and willingness to learn – you understand that learning anything worthwhile can be a challenge and you’re ready for that challenge.
  • Bring a laptop if completing face-to-face training.

Your computer or laptop (this is just a rough guide) should be reasonably modern and you should have an up to date web browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome. It will need to have a word-processing application such as Microsoft Word or access to Google Docs. Generally speaking if you can see and hear YouTube-style videos then you’ll be able to take full advantage of our resources.
