Workplace or ‘on-the-job’ assessment is where a person demonstrates their skills and knowledge to an assessor through their work, at work.
Ensuring quality and consistency in workplace assessment can be challenging. While conducting research for this article and for my own professional development I decided to document my lessons in a short mini-documentary:
Assessors at Registered Training Organisations (RTO) go to great lengths to establish assessment environments at TAFEs, colleges, in the classroom and online which reflect the challenges of the real world. Arguably, the most authentic approach to assessment is observing people demonstrating their skills and knowledge in a real workplace.
It makes sense, since one of the key reasons the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system exists in Australia is to equip people with (and assess that they have) the skills and knowledge to perform competently on the job.
